Workington Academy students’ images of support for NHS go on display

Artwork created by students to show their support for NHS and frontline workers is to go on display at West Cumberland Hospital.

Year 7 students from Workington Academy have been spending productive time at home making brightly coloured rainbows with messages of hope and support to display in their windows and gardens.

The academy, one of nine schools within the Cumbria Education Trust family, wanted to show its appreciation for the fantastic work being done in looking after people during the coronavirus pandemic. North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust is going to display the artwork on its video screens throughout the trust and on its ‘Wall of Hope’ at West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven.

Nic Tweddle, Director of Learning for Year 7 at Workington Academy, set students the task of creating a rainbow of hope to display and show support for their community and frontline workers.

Nic said: “I asked our students to send photos of their pictures / rainbow creations to me.  They have been collated and a video montage produced to share on our website and social media pages displaying Workington Academy’s support for our local community.”

The initiative has been well supported by students. Dozens of pieces of art make up the video entitled ‘Spreading hope and sharing support to the Workington Community’.

The video is set to some uplifting music and was compiled by CET’s Website and Social Media Manager, Andy Williamson. It can be viewed below:

Chief Executive for Cumbria Education Trust, Lorrayne Hughes, said: “This is an excellent example of some of the fantastic work our students have been producing across the whole trust.

“The resilience shown by many of our students during such unprecedented times is truly inspirational and I am very proud to see such creativity and teamwork.

“To be able to show our support for the NHS, whilst they face such demanding times, is truly an honour. We would like to thank them for all they are doing for us during these demanding times.”
