Is it the end of the lesson already?

Ten teacher pioneers at The Whitehaven Academy invited the cameras into their classrooms last week as part of the Osiris Teaching Intervention.

Learners of all ages showed off their positive attitudes, skills and habits across the curriculum. These lessons followed a teacher training session based on engaging learners where teachers were encouraged to try new approaches to ‘hook’ students into their activities building motivation and resilience.

Students collaborated on problem solving in maths, experiment design in science and cooking up delicious tikka masala in food technology. Year 7 oracy skills were developed in  Spanish and English where students built up their own questions by interviewing each other and then moving on to writing responses. A creative PE carousel lesson was used to consolidate skills and techniques and Wednesday ended with a music lesson rendition of Backstreet Boys ‘I want it that way’ on ukulele!

A rich and varied series of lessons had been carefully crafted to captivate learners who felt proud of what they had achieved. Their resilience, collaboration and commitment to learning was most impressive.

The teachers watched their videos and reflected upon their practice. All found the experience beneficial in terms of highlighting strengths and areas to take action.

The second training session focusing on feedback will take place in January 2019.
