On Friday 7th February, students from all of Cumbria Education Trust’s primary schools attended the CET Year 6 Maths Challenge, held at William Howard School. Designed by Mr McAree, CET’s Maths School Improvement Lead, the challenge was split into five rounds of mathematical problems to solve.
The pupils were split into teams of four and each came up with their own team name and slogan. Newtown Number Knights and Number Ninjas were some of the creative team names, along with slogans such as ‘We will never be divided! and ‘The Bros are back in town – Multiply, Divide, Add, Subtract’. You can see all of the team names and slogans below.
With only three points between the top three places, it was a very well fought competition! Well done to Castle Carrock Primary School’s team called ‘Equation Crushers’ who scooped first place, with Caldew Lea Primary School’s team ‘Caldew Lea Calculators’ coming in second and Petteril Bank School’s team ‘Two Short of Perfection’ in third place. Every school were so well represented, and the behaviour and engagement of each team was impeccable throughout the day.
Thank you to William Howard School for hosting the challenge, all of the Year 9 student ambassadors for helping, Mr McAree for creating the Maths challenges, Miss Tweddle and Mrs Newman for organising this wonderful event.
Well done to all of the pupils who participated – it was a brilliant day enjoyed by all.
