Thirty-nine Year 8 students from all five Cumbria Education Trust secondary schools came together at The Queen Katherine School for an exciting day of maths, problem solving and fast-paced competition.

Representing nine teams of four and one team of three, students tackled a range of challenging rounds including speed maths, logic puzzles, cross numbers and a high-energy countdown-style “make a number” game.

The atmosphere was electric throughout the day, with scores shifting after every round and the leaderboard constantly changing.

In the end, victory was sealed by a team from The Queen Katherine School, The Colourful Drawing Pins, who claimed first place after a closely fought contest.

Second place went to another team from The Queen Katherine School, The Cherry Blossom Trees, with third place secured by Pi-rates of Kirkby from Kirkby Stephen Grammar School.

Well done to all teams who took part:

Kirkby Stephen Grammar School
The Maths Tournament

The Whitehaven Academy
Easy as Pi
The West Coast Pi-rates

William Howard School
The Algebro’s
The Ninjas

Workington Academy
Prime Squad
Fraction Fighters

A special mention goes to Workington Academy’s Prime Squad, who competed as a team of three and performed exceptionally well, narrowly missing out on a place in the top three.

The event was a fantastic celebration of collaboration, resilience and a shared love of mathematics across the Trust. Congratulations to all students involved for their enthusiasm, teamwork and determination throughout the day.
