Newtown Primary School, part of Cumbria Education Trust, is proud to share the outcome of a recent Ofsted graded inspection, which took place on 17th and 18th June. The two-day visit marked a significant milestone in the school’s improvement journey – and the results are cause for real celebration.

Under the updated Ofsted framework, schools are no longer given a single overall judgement, but instead graded across five key areas. Newtown Primary School received two ‘Outstanding’ grades and three ‘Good’ grades:

  • Quality of education – Good
  • Behaviour and attitudes – Outstanding
  • Personal development – Outstanding
  • Leadership and management – Good
  • Early years provision – Good

These results reflect the significant progress made since the school’s last inspection in 2023, in which there were some areas that required improvement.

Mhairi Roberts, Headteacher, said, “We are absolutely thrilled with the outcome of this inspection. It is a testament to the relentless hard work of our staff, the dedication of our pupils, and the ongoing support from our parents, governors and the wider school community. Together, we have worked tirelessly to make Newtown Primary School a place where every child can truly thrive.”

Inspectors were full of praise for the school. Highlights from the report include:

“Pupils learn in an extremely calm and purposeful environment. They enjoy their lessons and focus exceptionally well.”

“The school is unwavering in its determination to prepare pupils for life beyond school.”

“The school and trust ensure that the curriculum reflects their high expectations for pupils’ learning and personal development.”

“Pupils develop their talents to a high level.”

The report also praised Newtown’s inclusive approach and high expectations for all learners, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND):

“Staff tailor the delivery of the curriculum to ensure the individual needs of pupils are met.”

The inspectors noted the school’s excellent behaviour and embedded routines, describing behaviour and attitudes as “excellent”, and personal development work as “exceptional”, highlighting weekly ‘missions’ that promote resilience, problem-solving, and creativity. Staff development was also commended, with the report noting that, “The school develops staff’s expertise,” ensuring consistently high-quality teaching across all subjects.

In response to the report, the school offered heartfelt thanks to the entire community:

“We are proud of the positive recognition from Ofsted, but even prouder of the people behind it. Our amazing staff, our wonderful children, and our supportive parents and carers all play a vital role in making Newtown Primary School such a special place to learn and grow.”

Looking ahead, the school remains focused on continuous improvement, ensuring every pupil continues to flourish both academically and personally.
