CET Year 2 Multi-Skills Festival 2025

On Wednesday 19th March 2025, Cumbria Education Trust (CET) hosted its Year 2 Multi-Skills Festival at Workington Academy, bringing together students from our CET primary schools for a dynamic day of sport, teamwork, and fun.

Pupils from Castle Carrock Primary School, Caldew Lea Primary School, Hensingham Primary School, Longtown Primary School, Newtown Primary School, Northside Primary School, Petteril Bank School, Tebay Primary School, Yanwath Primary School, and Yewdale Primary School took part in a variety of sporting activities, including Trampolining, Ball Skills, Dodgeball, Basketball, Obstacle Courses and Dance. Supporting them throughout the day were our Year 9 Sports Leaders from The Whitehaven Academy, William Howard School, and Workington Academy, who played a key role in coaching and encouraging the young participants.

A Day of Exciting Activities

Each school took it in turns to try out the sports on offer. Dodgeball, which is a fast-paced team game that challenged students’ hand-eye coordination, communication, and teamwork, got the children working together and having fun.

Trampolining was a firm favourite, as children learned different jumps and turns, improving their balance, coordination, and core strength while having an absolute blast.

On Workington Academy’s state-of-the-art 4G AstroTurf, pupils tackled an obstacle course, putting their agility, speed, and problem-solving skills to the test. The Ball Skills station saw fantastic displays of focus and coordination, with plenty of brilliant goals scored against the Sports Leaders!

They also worked on their Basketball skills, learning how to dribble and bounce a ball before trying to net the ball through the basketball hoop!

Over in the Main Hall, Just Dance had everyone moving, allowing children to express themselves through dance while reinforcing the joy of physical activity.

Miss Tweddle, CET Student Culture Lead, highlighted the festival’s success:
“It was fantastic to see so many young people from across CET schools coming together for such a positive event. The energy and enthusiasm of our Year 2 pupils were incredible, and our Year 9 Sports Leaders did an outstanding job in delivering engaging activities. Opportunities like this, using top-tier facilities, are one of the many benefits of being part of a Multi-Academy Trust. A huge thank you to our staff for making this enriching experience possible.”

A Celebration of Sport and Teamwork

This festival was a brilliant demonstration of how sports and physical activity can shape young learners’ experiences, fostering confidence, teamwork, and a love for movement.

A massive thank you to all the CET primary school children for their enthusiasm and exemplary behaviour, to our dedicated Sports Leaders for their support, to Workington Academy for hosting, to Mrs Walker-Taylor, Curriculum Leader of PE at Workington Academy, for facilitating the event and Miss Tweddle and Jocelyn Newman, Business Operations Assistant, for organising such a memorable event.
