William Howard School, part of Cumbria Education Trust, is proud to share the findings of its latest Ofsted inspection, which took place on 24th and 25th June 2025. The final report celebrates the school’s strong sense of community, its commitment to academic excellence, and the outstanding personal development opportunities available to students.
Inspectors praised the unique culture of the school, shaped by The William Howard Way – a shared set of values that underpin everything from classroom learning to wider school life. The report commends how students, despite coming from a range of areas and backgrounds, quickly develop a deep sense of belonging and mutual respect.
“This report captures the heart and soul of William Howard School,” said Headteacher Kath Pigdon. “It’s a powerful reflection of a school where aspiration, character, and care are woven into every aspect of daily life. We are incredibly proud of our students, staff, and wider community.”
Key Highlights from the Report:
- A Broad and Ambitious Curriculum: Inspectors praised the school’s academic offer, noting its strength, depth, and clarity of purpose.
- Character and Enrichment: The report highlights the school’s character curriculum, describing it as a key strength that broadens horizons through diverse experiences such as outdoor learning, archaeology, forensics, and philosophy. As one student told inspectors: “There is something for everyone.”
- Pupil Attitudes and Aspirations: Students were recognised for their maturity and commitment to learning, with inspectors noting their shared understanding that “education creates opportunity.”
- Student Leadership and Community Involvement: From sixth formers supporting younger readers to the popular ‘open spaces’ group where pupils care for animals, inspectors praised the many ways students contribute to the life of the school.
- Staff Dedication: The professionalism and passion of staff was also acknowledged. Inspectors noted how proud staff are to work at the school and how deeply committed they are to each student’s success.
This latest Ofsted report stands as a celebration of the school’s ongoing progress and a testament to the dedication and character of its pupils and staff.
